What to expect from the Mavericks in 2014-2015 - Small Forwards

With the exit of Shawn Marion to Cleveland, the Dallas Mavericks except that Chandler Parsons, Al-Farouq Aminu and Richard Jefferson be ready to occupy the space left by him. Shawn Marion make a name for himself by being one of the best defenders in the league, capable of guarding any position from guard to center.

Looking at last years stats we can understand the importance that Marion had but not completely! Stats don't say everything! We can't measure the defensive efourt that Marion had only looking at his stats, we have to see him play. Marion is one of the best perimeter defenders in the entire league. Now, the Mavs must fight the loss of Marion with numbers, with three new players.

Chandler Parsons, that arrives in Dallas to be the third star, along with Dirk Nowitzki and Monta Ellis. Parsons is going to be a little overpaid according to the production he had in Houston ($46.000.000 in 3 years) but the Mavs are paying for the potencial waiting to be developed. He is the perfect player to be developed by our coach, Rick Carlisle.
Parsons once said:

"I Think Defensively I can get much better"

And that's exactly what we except from Parsons, not that he is a bad defender because he isn't, but we are used to an elite defender in that position and for that, the stack is really high in that particular part of the game.
Ofensively, we have an improvement in Parsons, one of the best players in the league at finishing on fast-breaks, a good 3-point shooter (37,8% from the 3-point line) and he had a amazing average of 6,2 drives per game (more than Shawn Marion and Vince Carter together).
Parsons, in the three years that he had in the league always improved. He increased his minutes, points, rebounds, assists, free throws, PER, assist percentage, usage rate, win shares and free throw percentage.
He is, without a doubt, one versitale player. He can finish, distribute, win rebounds and so on. He is going to have a different role from Shawn Marion and Vince Carter because of that versatility and we can call him a "fill-the-blanks" player because he can do whatever the teams need him to do.

Al-Farouq Aminu is the player with more resemblace to Shawn Marion. If not the top rebounder among small forwards, Aminu is at least in the top 5. He had an average of 6 rebounds in only 25 minutes per game which is really impressive. We can't compare Aminu to a Marion on his prime but we can compare him (with some effort) to a old Marion and maybe we can forget his exit a little bit with this player.

Richard Jefferson arrives in Dallas to be the replacement of Vince Carter (what in my opinion is a very difficult role). We hope that he can have a contribution on the offensive side of the court because in the other end we don't except him to be productive.

Com a saída de Shawn Marion para Cleveland, os Dallas Mavericks esperam que Chandler Parsons, Al-Farouq Aminu e Richard Jefferson estejam prontos para preencher o seu vazio. Shawn Marion afirmou-se na NBA por ser um dos melhores defesas, capaz de guardar qualquer posição desde base a poste.

Olhando para os Stats da passada temporada conseguimos perceber a importância que Marion tinha na equipa mas não totalmente. Mas, há muito que os stats não dizem! O esforço defensivo é uma dessas coisas. Shawn Marion foi (e é) um dos melhores defensores de perímetro da liga. Agora os Mavericks vão tentar combater a perda de Marion com números, isto é, com três jogadores. 

Chandler Parsons, que chega a Dallas para ser a terceira estrela ao lado de Dirk Nowitzki e Monta Ellis. Parsons irá ser um pouco overpaid para a produção que teve em Houston ($46.000.000 de dólares em três anos) mas os Mavs estão a pagar pelo potencial que se espera que seja desenvolvido pelo nosso treinador, Rick Carlisle. 

Parsons já disse:

"I Think Defensively I can get much better"

É isso que pretendemos e esperamos que Parsons seja, não que ele seja um mau defensor porque não o é, mas estamos habituados a um defesa de elite naquela posição e por isso a fasquia está bastante elevada para aquele lado do jogo.

Ofensivamente temos uma melhoria em Parsons, um jogador que é um dos melhores a finalizar nos fast-breaks, consegue finalizar bem da linha de 3 (com uma boa percentagem de 37,8) e teve uma média de 6,2 drives por jogo (mais que Vince Carter e Shawn Marion juntos - 4,2).

Parsons é um jogador que nos três anos que jogou na liga melhorou sempre e bastante de ano para ano. Aumentou minutos, pontos, ressaltos, assistências, lances livres, PER, percentagem de assistência, usage rate, win shares e percentagem de lances livres.

Sem dúvida alguma que é um jogador versátil, consegue finalizar, distribuir, ganhar ressaltos, etc. Vai desempenhar um papel diferente de Shawn Marion e Vince Carter devido a esta sua versatilidade e podemos chamar-lhe um jogador de preencher espaços, uma vez que, irá fazer o que a equipa necessita que ele faça.

Al-Farouq Aminu por sua vez, é o jogador com mais parecenças em relação a Shawn Marion. Aminu, se não o melhor rebounder dos small-forwards, está no mínimo no top 5. Ele teve uma média de cerca de 6 ressaltos em apenas 25 minutos de jogo o que é muito impressionante. Não pudemos compara Aminu a um Marion no seu prime mas pudemos compará-lo (com algum esforço) a um Marion atual e talvez nos faça esquecer um pouco a sua saída.

Richard Jefferson chega a Dallas para assumir o papel de Vince Carter o que não é um papel nada fácil. Esperemos que consiga ser um bom contributo na parte ofensiva do campo porque o outro lado não se espera que consiga ser muito produtivo. 

What to expect from the Dallas Mavericks in 2014-2015 - Point Guards

Jameer Nelson, Devin Harris and Raymond Felton will be used in a rotation system that will allow to keep always in the game, a fresh pair of legs. With this the Dallas Mavericks could really increase the intensity of their game and, with players like Chandler Parsons and Monta Ellis in the roster, they could really benifict from it. Even because Parsons and Ellis were in the top 20 players with more points scored in fast-breaks in the previous season.
Seeing the Mavs forcing a quick game in transition can really improve their game and two Big mans in the roster can help: Tyson Chandler and Brandan Wright; because they can really finish in transition.

Dirk Nowitzki, in the other hand, was never know as a fastbreak player but he can be letal from downtown in transition and this could be really important.

Jameer Nelson brings something to the table that as been missing since the trade that sent Jose Calderon to the New York Knicks, and that is perimeter shooting. Nelson, in the past few seasons had a percentage of three-points of 35% but this was in a team that was in rebuild mode (Orlando Magic). In the Mavs we can except this percentage to increase because of the quality of the looks that he will get. If he has a good year we can except to see the percentage at 40% (similar to the one he has when D. Howard was with him in Orlando). 

Devin Harris, in his turn, is a player who probably will lead the team that will come from the bench. We hope that he can keep up with his good performances like we saw in the 2014 playoffs and score 10 points per game and assist the ball 5 times. If he can stay healthy we can except a great contribution off the bench.

Raymond Felton is, at this point, the Big question mark in Dallas. He had a rough year in the Knicks mas he now has the chance to a fresh start at the Mavs and we can only except him to contribute to the team.

O que esperar dos Mavericks em 2014/2015 - Point Guards

Jameer Nelson, Devin Harris e Raymond Felton vão ser usados num sistema de rotatividade. Isto vai permitir que haja sempre um par fresco de pernas em campo o que vai manter sempre a intensidade de jogo num ritmo elevado.
Com jogadores como Chandler Parsons e Monta Ellis no roster esta possibilidade de jogo vai beneficiar, e muito, os Dallas. Até porque quer Ellis quer Parsons estiveram no top 20 de jogadores com mais pontos marcados em fast-breaks, na temporada passada.
Se os Mavs apostarem num jogo de transição também têm dois big mens que finalizam bem nesses casos nomeadamente Tyson Chandler e Brandan Wright.
Já Dirk Nowitzki não será a nossa maior aposta nos fast-breaks até pela sua idade (36) mas já por diversas vezes o vimos a marcar triplos na transição e será sempre uma grande ajuda.

Jameer Nelson traz algo à equipa que faltava desde a saída de José Calderon (devido à troca que trouxe Tyson Chandler de volta aos Mavericks), o tiro exterior. Nelson teve uma percentagem de lançamentos de 3 pontos que rondou os 35% mas isto nuns Orlando Magic num modo de reconstrução e por isso é natural que esta percentagem suba devido à qualidade dos looks que vai ter. Se tudo correr bem podemos mesmo chegar a ver Nelson a voltar às suas percentagens de 40 % da linha de três pontos (na altura em que jogava com Dwight Howard).

Devin Harris, por sua vez, será um jogador que irá provavelmente conduzir a segunda equipa após sair do banco. Espera-se que continue a marcar perto dos 10 pontos por jogo e que continue a fazer as suas 5 assistências. Foi um jogador muito importante nos playoffs de 2014 e caso se mantenha saudável pudemos esperar uma boa contribuição.

Raymond Felton é neste momento, a maior incógnita dos Dallas Mavericks. Teve um ano mau nos New York Knicks mas espera-se que tenha um novo começo com os Mavs e que consiga contribuir mais do que fez em NY.
